The History

For the past 22 years, retiring Head of School David Brantley has led Fort Dale Academy.  He leaves a legacy of respect from all factions of the school community. The next Head of School will assume the leadership role of a prospering school positioned for future success. The school was founded in 1969 and firmly established its academic reputation in the early 1970s.

In its beginning one building contained grades 1-9 for the first year with the Upper School being added the following year.  In 1983 South Butler Academy merged with Fort Dale Academy and the school completed the construction of the kindergarten and computer buildings in 1996.  In the year of 2000 the math building and field house were opened. Most recently the last phase of the building plan was completed with the addition of the baseball and softball complex.

The mission of Fort Dale Academy is to challenge students through a rigorous academic curriculum in a supportive environment.  The school assists students toward their full potential.  Fort Dale Academy desires to instill the character traits of personal responsibility, creativity, honorable behavior, and respectfulness.  The school promotes physical development and team work in its competitive sports program.

Fort Dale Academy anticipates more than 500 students for the 2018-19 school year with approximately 210+ in grades 7-12 and 290+ in grades K3-6.  The faculty consists of 57 dedicated teachers.  These 57 faculty members are experienced, talented, and committed to a vigorous developmentally appropriate academic program that consistently produces academically talented leaders for the next generation.  Instructionally, the Fort Dale Academy provides a variety of teaching methods to include direct instruction, student centered learning, collaboration, and research (STEM) formats integrated with technology.

The Lower School students receive instruction in the four core areas including language arts, math, science, and social studies. All students experience the additional academically enhancing studies in the arts, foreign language, technology, physical education, library, and music.  The Middle School program expands the academic foundation which is established in the Lower School while preparing the students for the rigors of the Upper School curriculum.  Partnered with academic excellence, Fort Dale Academy favors the “whole student/well rounded” experience through offerings in the visual and performing arts as well as a varied athletic program.

Please refer to the Fort Dale Academy website for course offerings.
