Middle School/Upper School Band Director (Part Time)

Position Summary 

The Donoho School seeks an enthusiastic, student-centered, and organized Part-Time Middle School/Upper School Band Director to lead and grow its instrumental music program. The Band Director will inspire students through engaging instruction, prepare ensembles for performances, and foster a lifelong appreciation of music while contributing to the vibrant life of the school community. 

This position offers a unique opportunity to supplement salary through private music instruction and additional paid responsibilities based on the candidate’s interests and qualifications. 

Schedule 

  • Monday through Friday 
  • 1:00 p.m. – 3:05 p.m. during the academic year 
  • Attendance at approximately five home varsity football games each fall to lead the pep band 

Primary Responsibilities 

  • Direct the Middle School and Upper School Band program. 
  • Plan and teach daily rehearsals and music classes. 
  • Prepare students for school concerts and performances. 
  • Develop musicianship, instrumental technique, and ensemble performance skills.
  • Select appropriate music and organize rehearsals. 
  • Maintain an organized band room and oversee school-owned instruments and equipment.
  • Encourage student participation and help grow the instrumental music program.
  • Collaborate with faculty and administration to support school events and traditions. 

Student Honor Band Opportunities 

  • Coordinate student participation in All-County and All-State Band auditions. 
  • Prepare eligible students for successful auditions and performances. 
  • Complete all required registration, communication, and logistical arrangements for honor band events.

School Community Responsibilities 

  • Direct the pep band at approximately five home football games each school year.
  • Participate in selected school performances and special events as determined by the school calendar. 

Additional Income Opportunities 

This position provides opportunities for additional compensation beyond the contracted salary. 

Private Lessons 

Students may elect to receive weekly 30-minute private lessons during the school day. Families contract directly with the instructor. 

Typical lesson fees range from $75–$100 per student per month, providing the opportunity for significant supplemental income. 

Additional Paid Responsibilities 

Additional compensated duties may be available based on the candidate’s interests, experience, and school needs. 

Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Music Education, Music Performance, or a related field preferred. • Experience directing bands and working with middle and high school students preferred. • Strong instrumental conducting and rehearsal skills. 
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills. 
  • Ability to inspire students of varying musical backgrounds and abilities.
