UPPER SCHOOL LEARNING SPECIALIST
JOB DESCRIPTION
Houston Academy is a premier independent, college preparatory school located in Dothan, AL. Houston Academy is searching for an experienced and dedicated Upper School Learning Specialist to join our team August 1, 2025. This individual will support students with diverse learning needs in grades 8-12, collaborating with teachers, students, and families to foster academic success. Houston Academy seeks to provide a unique opportunity for students who have diagnosed learning disabilities to receive a rigorous education within a college preparatory environment.
REQUIREMENTS
The ideal applicant will possess the following:
- Degree in Special Education, Learning Disabilities, Collaborative Degree, Educational Psychology, or a related field;
- Experience teaching US students with learning disabilities;
- Experience working with middle or high school students in an educational support role;
- Knowledge of learning differences, executive functioning skills, and intervention strategies;
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively collaborate with students, families, and faculty;
- Ability to analyze, interpret, and apply psychoeducational testing;
- General knowledge to assist US students with rigorous content in math, science, social studies and English; and
- Strong leadership skills.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide direct and indirect instructional support and resources to students and teachers in a positive environment;
- Provide individualized and small-group support to students with learning differences;
- Develop and share academic support plans for students with faculty who work with that student and update that plan, as needed ;
- Advocate for students by coordinating support plans and accommodations;
- Collaborate with teachers to design differentiated instruction and accommodations;
- Develop and implement learning strategies tailored to students’ needs;
- Assist students to improve executive functioning skills: study skills, test taking skills, time management, organization, and planning;
- Conduct assessments and interpret educational evaluations to inform instructional practices;
- Provide training for staff and parents to assist students with learning difficulties;
- Communicate regularly with parents, teachers, and school leadership regarding student progress; and
- Participate in campus and community events.
INFORMATION
Salary will be commensurate with degree level and teaching experience.
